Empowering communities in Cambodia with clean water

In the Thpong District of Cambodia, where rural communities have long struggled with accessing safe and clean water, a remarkable partnership has been making waves in the quest for clean and safe drinking water.

WASH SDO (WASH Skills Development Organization) and CAWST are working together to improve the lives of countless Cambodian families.

A shared vision for clean water

With over 16 million people, Cambodia faces a critical need for accessible, safe, and clean water sources, especially in rural areas. Families here have relied on traditional practices, such as using water from tanks, wells, or streams, for generations. These practices, deeply ingrained in their way of life, are believed to be sufficient. But, the reality is far from ideal. Many Cambodian families face daily hardships due to contaminated water sources, leading to frequent health issues and financial strain.

This is why WASH SDO, a Cambodian local organization committed to enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, is on a mission to get clean water to the people in their districts. CAWST, a global leader in WASH solutions, recognizes the need for sustainable, community-driven change and shares WASH SDO’s vision of transforming lives through clean water access.

The impact of training programs

For years, people thought their water sources were sufficient and that they were immune to waterborne diseases. Many families purchase expensive bottled water or spend hours boiling water to make it safe. But now, they can save that money and time, and redirect resources toward other essential needs like food and healthcare.

This transformation has been possible because WASH SDO, in collaboration with CAWST, began providing Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) training programs in communities, one of the cornerstones of this partnership. They’ve learned about the dangers of contaminated water and the long-term effects of microscopic contaminants. Through tireless efforts and education, the perspective of these communities have begun to shift.

The impact has been profound. Families who once struggled to access clean water have found hope and a better quality of life through HWTS. This has not only improved their health but also alleviated financial burdens.

The role of community empowerment

A critical element of this transformative partnership has been the involvement of local districts. District officers have attended WASH SDO’s training sessions to learn about HWTS and adapt these practices to the unique needs of their communities. They have played a vital role in raising awareness and implementing effective water treatment technologies.

Provincial and district government officials meet in Thpong District to talk about their experiences educating members of the community, with support from WASH SDO.

Additionally, community members themselves have become champions of change. Koa Sokkhea, a mother of two in the Thpong District of Kampong Speu Province, is a shining example. Thanks to the HWTS training and the use of a ceramic pot water filter, Koa Sokkhea’s family now enjoys clean, safe water. She has not only improved the health and well-being of her own family, but has also become a role model in her community, sharing her success story and inspiring others to embrace HWTS practices.

A vision for the future

The impact of the partnership between WASH SDO and CAWST goes beyond individual households. It extends to entire communities, fostering healthier, more sustainable futures. Through our partnership, we’ve discovered the importance of training trainers, raising awareness, and empowering communities at the local district level.

As we look ahead, our shared vision is to reach universal clean water and sanitation in Cambodia by 2025. Our work has just begun as only 18% of households in Thpong District have clean water access. This is where support from North America and other international partners becomes pivotal.
