Outcomes of the HWTS Session at World Water Forum

A group of 25 organizations convened for a session on "How to Promote Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) Programs" at the Learning Centre of the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey on March 17, 2009.

Approximately 30 people attended the participatory workshop which featured nine presentations explaining the rationale for HWTS; introducing HWTS technologies and processes; and talking about how to generate demand from consumers and governments, how to develop a supply chain, and how to support implementing organizations.

The discussions resulted in several organizations identifying specific future actions and directions.

A list of resources and technology fact sheets (Ceramic Pot Filter, Concrete Biosand Filter, Kanchan Arsenic Filter, Boiling, Chlorine Solution) produced by CAWST were also provided to participants. Facts sheets for NaDCC (Aquatabs) and Solar Disinfection (SODIS) are currently under review and will be available soon.

HWTS will be featured at the WEDC Conference (Water, Engineering and Development Centre) in Ethiopia from May 18-22, the Stockholm World Water Week from August 16-22, and at a meeting of the Research Group of the HWTS Network in Dublin on September 20-23.
