Safe water, hygiene practices and sanitation are three of the primary drivers for improving public health. Extensive research and numerous evaluations have demonstrated that simply improving water supplies may have limited impact on improving people's health. However, improving sanitation and safely disposing of excreta can have a marked effect, and can reduce incidence of diarrhea by 36% or more. The greatest reductions in diarrheal incidence are possible when sanitation improvements are combined with improved hygiene practices and improved water supplies and water quality.

A successful sanitation program requires a thorough assessment of the social, cultural, environmental and technological factors that impact on the design of the different elements of the program. It is these factors that will guide the identification and selection of appropriate technology options, promotion approaches, and the actual methods of implementing the program.

Content

• Theory: global water and sanitation issues; low cost sanitation technologies; social, cultural, economic and environmental issues; approaches for implementing sanitation programs; identifying the implementation approach and technology options.
• Practical: construction of a latrine slab, SanPlat slab, pour flush latrine slab, and domed slab.
• Implementation: selecting an appropriate range of technology options; selecting an appropriate implementation approach; developing an effective implementation plan; community promotion, education and participatory planning; requirements for a successful program; lessons learned and case studies; developing the vision and next steps after the workshop.

Registration

The cost of this 4 day workshop held in Calgary is $ 550 CDN.

This covers all materials, handouts, instructions and food for the first day.

To confirm your registration a non-refundable advance of $125 CDN needs to be paid at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of the workshop. CAWST reserves the right to cancel the workshop up to 2 weeks prior to the event - your advance ($125) will be reimbursed if this occurs. The remainder of the cost must be paid by the first day of the workshop.

The full amount of $550 can also be paid upfront in one transaction and will be fully reimbursed in the case where CAWST would cancel.
