Description

The objective of the Africa Learning Exchange is to enhance the existing Biosand Filter Implementers (BSFI) program by creating a network of Biosand Filter Implementers who can share experiences from many different organizations from across Africa.

This Learning Exchange will be an opportunity for the existing BSF Implementers and Seeds Of Hope International Partnership’s WET Centre staff (AFMAC) to share experiences with other BSF Implementers from other African Countries. Existing Implementers will learn from each other, discuss challenges and successes, and receive updates on the progress of the BSF technology and Household water treatment initiatives in Africa and throughout the world. The daily schedule may be a combination of presentations, discussion groups, field tours and learning and sharing opportunities, facilitated by the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation and AFMAC.

The importance of providing this opportunity for the existing Biosand Filter Project Implementers learning exchange is to help these organizations to be able to share and discuss their successes and failures. This will help all the participants to have more effective implementation strategies and can help with scaling up of the technology. The overriding objective is to use their existing implementation as one tool which will help to reach the millennium development target to reduce by half the number of people in their respective countries in Africa who do not have access to an improved water source or sanitation facilities. This conference is directed at Biosand Filter Implementers who have been trained in this technology by the Seeds Of Hope AFMAC project or its partner the Center For Affordable Water and Sanitation Technologies. This conference would be building on the work done in the past by these organizations as it would help to create a working network of successful Biosand Filter Implementers who can feedback their success and failures to the AFMAC and CAWST which will help these organizations to better train and provide client support to the new and existing implementers.

During the first day, an assessment will be done with the participants to determine their needs and level of interest in the topics which will be discussed during the rest of the week. The agenda for the remaining workshop will then be created that will attempt to address the most important issues that were identified by the needs assessment. An atmosphere of sharing and cooperation will be fostered throughout the conference which will encourage the participants to continue to network with each other after the conference is finished.
