Youth Wavemakers Start Their Ripple

On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, over 150 elementary, junior and high school students gathered at the Calgary Zoo for the 6th Annual Wavemakers Youth Summit. These fortunate and energetic students learned how they can make a difference in the world through water education.

The action-packed day included energizing activities on local and global water issues, a water-related drama production performed by grade 3's and 4's at Haysboro Elementary School (with support from the theatre group Trickster Theatre) and dedicated time for 20 motivated youth teams to plan out a water action project.

Each team will apply for a $500 grant from CAWST Youth Wavemakers to execute their water action projects over the upcoming months. These unique and awe-inspiring projects will transform their communities and motivate others to get involved in the cause of clean water for all. Results of the projects will be showcased on World Water Day on March 22, 2012. Past projects have included encouraging schools to install low-flush toilets, awareness raising of poor water quality in the developing world through school announcements and raising money for water projects internationally.

Vanessa Nicolson, a high school teacher from Western Canada High School, thanked CAWST for “putting on such an informative and inspiring Youth Summit today” and that her team “can't wait to get started on our action project”!

Be sure to check back in March to find how these projects turned out!

The Youth Wavemakers program is made possible with the generous support of Suncor, Encana, RBC and the City of Calgary.
