Description
The Community Health Worker is essential for the successful implementation of any household water treatment, sanitation or hygiene program. This course will provide participants with the skills to effectively organize, train and supervise Community Health Workers as part of a new or existing program.
The workshop reviews the fundamentals of global water issues, water quality, disease transmission, household water treatment, hygiene and sanitation. The emphasis is placed on behaviour change, participatory learning, facilitation techniques, social marketing and communication, and training methods. Topics are covered in an interactive fashion using learning tools and activities the participants can then apply to train Community Health Workers.
Content
- Water, Sanitation, Hygiene: global and local issues, water quality and disease transmission, improved hygiene and sanitation.
- Household Water Treatment: community versus household water treatment, source protection, water treatment process: sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, safe water storage.
- Skills, Knowledge, Attributes: role of the Community Health Worker, role of the Coordinator, model of behaviour change, participatory learning tools and facilitation techniques, social marketing and communication methods, how to work with households, community groups and schools.
- Training Community Health Workers: how to conduct a needs assessment, how to develop a training program, how to supervise and monitor Community Health Workers, taking the next steps.
